Vic: More than 1,000 mourn Jack Dyer's death

MELBOURNE, Aug 27 AAP - Richmond Australian Football legend Jack Dyer was farewelledby more than 1,000 mourners in Melbourne today.

Dyer, who died on Saturday aged 89, played 312 games for Richmond, with his uncompromising,fearless style of play earning him the nickname of Captain Blood.

The congregation at St Ignatius Catholic Church in Richmond heard that Dyer had almostsingle-handedly saved the Tigers from extinction when the club was in financial perilin the 1980s.

It was also told that the game itself would have struggled without him.

After retiring in 1952, Dyer became one of the earliest football media stars, teamingwith former Collingwood champion Lou Richards in the TV shows League Teams and World ofSport for almost three decades.
